Speeches & Toastmasters >> Toastmasters

Let’s raise a glass to… a series of well-made and meaningful speeches at your wedding event.

After all, the speeches should be another special moment when the full focus falls on a beautiful bride and her dashing groom. But how often have you seen this moment fall below the mark – lost either in poor humour or just sheer nerves?

Here again, the message has to be to keep it simple, keep it short (about 10 minutes for the Best Man, half that for any others) and use pre-prepared notes rather than trying to ad-lib.

It’s a fact that strange things can happen to Best Men when they stand up to address a room full of guests – just bear in mind that your audience actually wants you to succeed. Resist the desire to rush. Speak as clearly as you can. And if the anecdotes and jokes are falling flat, always be prepared to simplify and just do the thing you’re there to do – and that’s toast the bride and groom with sincerity and true friendship.

More and more couples are setting the tone by using the services of professional toastmasters, with their red-coats, a traditional English phenomenon, they can add extra dimension of dignity and elegance to any event.

And apart from being an entertaining speciality a good toastmaster will ensure the smooth running of your event, letting guests know exactly what’s happening throughout the day.

Their striking red attire and, particularly, their commanding tones, can bring a wonderful sense of order and purpose to what can be typically chaotic events.
Their duties include announcing guests upon arrival, and gathering them ready for photos. The toastmaster will escort the bridal party, and then the bride and groom, to there seats and will co-ordinate the speeches and toasts.
After the wedding breakfast (lunch), the toastmaster will close the formal proceedings, announce the dancing, and escort the bride and groom from the table for their first dance.

At Indian events, the formalities are somewhat different, and so be sure to get someone who has undertaken other Asian weddings. Nowadays, the toastmaster works as a right-hand man to help the day run smoothly, working closely with the wedding planner or caterer.
